Physical Therapy For Runners
Running is more than just exercise. It’s your sport. Your rehabilitation should reflect that.
As both a physical therapist and a runner, I understand the unique physical and mental challenges that come with running injuries. I’ve experienced my own setbacks, navigated return-to-run progressions, and I understand the frustration of having an injury interrupt training.
Whether you’re training for your first 5K or your next marathon, your evaluation begins with a comprehensive running readiness assessment. Rather than focusing only on where it hurts, I evaluate your body as a whole to identify the factors that may have contributed to your injury. This includes strength, mobility, balance, movement patterns, training history, and other factors that influence how your body tolerates the demands of running.
Have you ever had a running injury that seemed to go away when you rested, only to return as soon as you started running again?
Rest alone rarely addresses the underlying cause. My goal is to identify why the injury developed in the first place and create a personalized plan that helps you recover while reducing the risk of it coming back.
Many runners also struggle with questions like:
- Should I run through this pain or should I stop?
- How much discomfort is safe?
- How do I balance rehabilitation with my training?
- When is it okay to increase my mileage or intensity?
- How can I reduce my risk of this injury happening again?
These questions don’t have one-size-fits-all answers. Together, we’ll make decisions based on your injury, your goals, your training schedule, and how your body is responding.
When appropriate, I also perform a detailed running gait analysis. The way you move while running can provide valuable insight into why an injury developed and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce excessive stress on injured tissues, and support a safe return to pain-free running.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury, returning after time away from running, or looking to stay healthy throughout a training cycle, I’ll develop a plan that helps you continue making progress while keeping your long-term running goals in focus.
